The social and historical orgins of the various police systems; police culture, role and career; police in the legal system; social and legal restraints on police practices; police discretion in practice; police and community; police organization and community control mechanisms. Required course for criminal justice majors. Part of the criminal justice concentration and minor. May also be taken as an elective. Class 4, Credit 4 (offered regularly)
